One benefit of being a teacher is that I come into contact with so many incredibly talented people. Turns out that some musicians may in fact be just as talented at computer science or the visual arts. Dan Bennett is one of those. Many former students stay in contact via social media, and for several years I'd noted Dan was posting very striking examples of his ink drawings. I made a mental note to maybe one day use his art for an album cover. As this album came together and I decided upon Currents as the album title, I thought an image of ocean waves might be appropriate, and soon a picture of stark black and white curves reminiscent of Dan’s art came to my mind.

Simultaneously, I knew that I would be taking a year-long sabbatical to finish the album, and decided that I would use some of that time to create a few videos and perhaps even learn animation. The only barrier is that I can’t draw, paint, sculpt, etc. Then the lightbulb – what if I asked Dan not only for the album cover artwork, but for sets of images I could animate. Scanning the lyric of “Think of the Night,” it was obvious that there were many objects and scenes embedded in the song. So, I drew up a list: an ear, a moth, a train, etc. Dan quickly responded positively, and soon thereafter I began to receive these awesome images via email.

So, Dan makes the images that move me, and I make those images that move me move. The quality of his work elevates the end result far above the quality of my animation, but hey, it’s my first attempt and I’m pretty happy with it. Not that I’m giving up my day job….
